Introduction
Students have the possibility to discuss about books they read and liked, play different interesting games related to the books and characters while spending some quality time with their peers. Students may also discover books they could be interested in and read later on based on their colleagues` discussions and suggestions.
Learning Objectives
- - Encourage students to develop reading and speaking skills;
- - Encourage students to discover new books they may be interested to read;
- - Stimulate students` imagination and creativity;
- - Develop cooperative and collaborative skills in students;
- - Exploit and develop students` digital and artistic skills.
Process
1. Students decide upon 20-25 books read by at least 2 of them and make a list. 2. `Guess the book`-game. Each student picks up a character from a book without telling the others and writes a speech to justify the character`s deeds in the book. The speech can be illustrated and supported by a poster made with Pic collage . 3. Students who have read a particular book are divided into 2 small groups and have a debate on the topic Why read this book? The other students may tell in the end if they are convinced or not to read that particular book and why. 4. Students choose a particular scene from a book and stage it in front of the others. They may create costumes and decorations to enliven the atmosphere (group work). The other students may make comments in the end on what they appreciated and if they are determined to read that book or not. Students may even record the staging. 5. Students imagine a `live library` where there are the books mentioned and in front of each book there is a student who plays `the robot part`. When somebody is interested in a particular book `the robot` may provide a speech on that book in order to convince the buyer the book is worth reading. The speech can also be recorded on a smartphone. 6. `I know this book`-game Students sit in a circle and in the middle there is a student/2-3 students holding a particular book she/he/they have read on their own or in tandem but the others haven`t. The student(s) in the middle just shows the others the book in many editions (title, writer, covers etc) using the Internet. In a given period of time, each student in the circle has to complete a worksheet with 1-2 words they think may be related to the book in referring to: type of book, plot, characters, ending. The student(s) in the middle decide(s) who has given the answers closest to the truth and declares the winner.
